Running is fun!

Women’s Mini Marathon – 10km – June Bank Holiday 2nd June by amikax

Finally on the start line in Fitzwilliam Square With my colleague, surrounded by over 40,000 women – amazing. And we are all here to enjoy this beautiful day and maybe prove ourselves that we can make it. But that’s it. It’s all about fun and raising money for many good causes. I’m running in pink t-shirt supporting Irish Cancer Society’s Action Breast Cancer initiative. Waiting for 3pm start we were singing, waving to the camera and watching the red heart shaped balloons flying to the sky.

And finally the 3pm start arrived – for the first 3 km I was trying to over pass all the walkers. I know it’s not about winning but I wanted to run, not walk, and so I did. I left my friend on about 4th km and started my individual challenge. And what a challenge it was. The heat was quite unique for Irish weather and there was no water station until 7.5 km. Fortunately there were hot firemen with fire hose. And I’m sure they enjoyed pouring water on girls in the same way we enjoyed water falling on our faces and our bodies…J Wet T-shirt contest…

Although men are not supposed to take part in this run there were few “brave” ones – wearing pink wigs, sexy waitress outfits or funny dresses – real sacrifice in this weather conditions, but it’s all for a good cause.

Getting closer to the finish line in Stephen’s Green felt really good. Hearing people cheering up and the taste of the finish line getting closer and closer motivated me to use the rest (really the rest) of my power and I crossed the finish line in 58 minutes. Not bad considering the heat.

I collected my medal, done some stretching and headed to the Maritime Festival in Dublin Docklands for well deserved sausage and pint of German beer! 😉
